NerdFest 2007

Yesterday I registered for Startup Camp a.k.a The Unconference of the Startup Community. It’s where 400 or so like-minded members of the startup community get together for a 2-day collaboration on a plethora of topics – starting up without funding, open business models, software scalability considerations, intellectual property issues, etc. In true testament to the entrepreneurial spirit, there is also a Best Startup Contest where you present your idea to the other attendees during a “Speed Geeking” (their words, not mine) session.

Startup Camp is conducted Open Space. style. At the start of the day, there is a general assembly where attendees propse the discussions they are interested in leading. The proposed discussions are put up on a whiteboard that lists all available rooms and timeslots. Principles of Open Space include:

  • Whoever comes are the right people.
  • Whatever happens is the only thing that could have.
  • Whenever it starts is the right time.
  • When it is over, it is over.
  • Document your session on the wiki.

I woke up at the ungodly hour of 3:00 again this morning and created a to-do list for the day:

  1. Create business cards for the “unconference”. What do you think?
  2. business-card.jpg

  3. Pare down my executive summary to one page.
  4. Research (google stalk) some of the attendees and determine who I need to talk to.
  5. Spend 2 hours on the 1s and 2s to warm-up for Sunday.
  6. Go to the gym.
  7. Increase my cultural quotient by attending the ballet at City Center.

I’m feeling soulful today:

Sam & Dave – Soul Man

Eccentric Soul: The Capsoul Label – Pure Soul

The Funky 16 Corners – Dap Walk

Cult Cargo: Belize City Boil-up – Shame Shame Shame

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings – Just Dropped In (to see what my condition was in)

Eccentric Soul: The Capsoul Label – Number One

Here’s hoping you stick with the early morning productivity to routine. May it lead to getting shit done, making money, and an eventual move to Brooklyn.

Hey Vikas. Feedback on your biz card: scrap “concert junkie” and “event coordinator.” Go with Entrepreneur/DJ/Change Agent. And it’s cool, you don’t have to pay me for these edits. xx
